Anatomy teaching started in Targu-Mures in the year of 1945, at the same time with the founding of the Medical Institute. After a period of transition, in the year of 1947 it was organized as a unitary discipline, the Department of Anatomy and Embryology, its first leader being named professor Stefan Kornyei (1947-1949), previously active in Heidelberg, Debretin & Cluj. He was preoccupied with the promotion of young teaching staff and continued his researches regarding the development of articulations, until he left for Hungary.
Professor Tiberiu Maros, a graduate of Medical Institute of Targu-Mures in the year of 1947, was named lecturer and chief of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology with he led for 40 years (1949-1989). He was promoted associate professor in the year 1950, then professor in the year 1960, having a fundamental contribution to the organization and modernization of the Anatomy and Embryology teaching. He founded the didactic museum of the department, guided a significant number of PhD works, was preoccupied with the promotion of the didactic personnel, his disciples becoming university professors and attending physicians recognized in the country and abroad. He contributed to organizing the scientific life of anatomists in the country through symposiums and National Anatomy Conferences which he initiated starting with the first manifestation of this kind in Targu-Mures-Sovata in the year 1978. he created optimal conditions for the research activity of the department and leaded the research committees in the field of experimental and clinical morphology, interdisciplinary researches. From the multiple research themes we point out those regarding the viscero-visceral and neuro-visceral interrelations of the liver, hepatic regeneration, experimental cirrhosis, experimental and clinical cardiac surgery, neuromorphology. He published in national and international magazines approximately 400 scientific papres, he edited a large number of anatomy courses and for the monography dedicated to the interrelations of the liver, he received the “Victor Babes” prize of the Romanian Academy.
Professor Ludovic Seres-Sturm was named chief of department in the year 1989 after professor Tiberiu Maros retired. He’s a graduate of the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy of Targu-Mures, the clss of 1956. he activated at the Department of Anatomy since the year 1952 as a demonstrating student. He advances through competition all didactic positions. He contributed to reorganizing the anatomical teaching through the introduction of clinical anatomy. He modernized the anatomic prosecture service, the osarium, the research laboratorie and extended the teaching space of the department. At the same time he founded the Department of Anatomy and Embryology of the new Faculty of Medicine created inside the University “Lucian Blaga” of Sibiu. He was preoccupied with recruiting and promoting the teaching staff of the two universities and conducted a significant number of PhD works for obtaining scientific titles. He’s a founding member of the Romanian Society of Anatomists and its first vicepresident. He organized during the years Symposiums and National Anatomical Congresses and participated at over 30 International Anatomy Congresses. He elaborated 20 courses and manuals of Anatomy, 5 monographies of which the “Hepatic Regeneration” received the “Gheorghe Marinescu” prize of Romanian Academy. As an author and co-author he published over 300 scientific papers, his prioritary research domains being those of experimental hepatology, osteoarticulary biology, reconstructive orthopaedics and was preoccupied by the current problems of anatomical teaching. He is a member of many international Anatomy Societies and Anatomy Academies and a Doctor Honoris Causa.
Since the year 2001 he continues his activity as a consultant professor, PhD conductor and Chief of Department was appointed Associate Professor Magda Seres-Sturm, who graduated the University of Medicine in 1962. since 1968 she becomes a member of the teaching staff. She’s author of Anatomy and Physiology courses of Pharmacy students. She’s author and co-author of more than 100 scientific works of which 40 were published. Her scientific preoccupations: hepato-biliary interrelations, Liver Protective substances, the Effects of Fitosteroids on experimental osteoporosis. A philosophy Doctor since 1979, since 2001 chief of Departmnet, reelected in 2004. She’s member of the University Senate and a founding member of the Romanian Society of Anatomists.
Since 2008, the Department of Anatomy and Embryology is led by professor Klara Brinzaniuc, the current science vice-rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Targu-Mures.
